Sunset in Reed Point

T

Our Reed Point Grain Elevators haloed by the sunset.   Summer is reaching it’s end, but we have one last celebration here in Reed Point.   The Sheep Drive is coming September 1st, and there’s still some availability.  See you there!

Prairie Dog Town
This small park located off Exit 377 on I-90  was preserved thanks to Livingston Wildlife Photographer, Edward Boehm and others dedicated to protecting these sophisticated little creatures.  Upon entering the park, one is greeted by little chirp-barks as the sentinel flips his tail and warns the pack that there is danger coming.  In this instance, it was us in our gray prius.   Eyes peered out from their cone shaped homes to watch the intruders.  Signs around the park give more information about our furry hosts.  The Prairie Dog homes are 14 feet deep, with different burrows used as a listening post, toilet area, and a main living quarters.   The mound shaped holes are the front door to their homes and the crater shaped ones are the back doors.
In mid-May, the prairie puppies are born, and they can be seen in groups, curiously watching us as we pass.   As we sat awhile, the alarms quieted down and we saw two prairie dogs, nuzzle each other before heading their separate ways.   The little puppies were so cute with parents watching over them from behind.  It’s a great place to have a picnic and just watch these fascinating creatures.  Though the longer I sat, the more I realized that perhaps we were the entertainment, and not the other way around.
Reed Point Sheep Drive

September 1st, 2019 will be the 31st Annual Sheep Drive in Reed Point, MT.

The morning begins with a pancake breakfast at the Fire Station, benefitting our local firefighters. Vendors line up and down the main street displaying a variety of creative wares.   The classic car show at the post office has cool, vamped out vehicles from the 1930’s to 70’s.   If you’re lucky, you might spy a Leprechaun, or even Little Bo Peep.

Games are held down at the park throughout the day.  If you  come to the auction, you might just find a new (or old) treasure.     Delicious food and drinks are available at the Waterhole Saloon and diverse vendors..   The parade comes through town in the afternoon and we all wait for the running of the sheep.  These gentle wooly creatures come running and leaping down the main street before heading back home for a well deserved rest in their pasture.

In the evening, the live music and street dance begins.   It’s a fun day to bring the entire family and celebrate Sheep Drive.
